We understand that most people are not hardened adventurers and that they are not used to using a 4×4 in this way. It is for this reason that we actively encourage our customers to return their vehicle to African Overlanders within 7 days of departure on your travels. This gives you the time to acclimatize to your new environment, way of life and the vehicle before you come back with the car to ask questions and have everything viewed mechanically where necessary. Although we are available to advise you during your journey, we are convinced that after a ‘7-day check’ you will be ready to continue your explorations with as much confidence and understanding of your vehicle and its equipment.Seven days check-over
Every car has the same design. There is a two or three drawer system, which contains the kitchen utensils and tools. The refrigerator is mounted on top, the tables and the seats fit behind or beside it. The rest is for your luggage. Car set up
All the Hilux’s are Diesel, this gives you better economy on fuel, most of the cars have a standard 90 litre tank but a few are upgraded to have an extension tank as well. This is documented under each car. A tank of 90 litres would get you at least 720 kilometers, in these days in Africa this is way further than any distance between fuel stations. Some of the cars do and some don’t, the information is listed under each car. We do supply an extension cord in each car so that the fridge can be plugged into 240v at the campsites, then only when the car is running is the fridge turned on. We want the business to run on trust, this is very important as we want you to look after our cars, so we don’t take any payment until you are happy that the car is in a good start state for your trip. you also must understand your responsibilities of daily checks, driving the car and taking care of the car. We will always try to help you extend your trip, but we will have more bookings for the car so you need to let us know as quickly as possible if you want to extend. So the following countries are covered by the insurance – Republic of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe or Malawi. If you want to go to a country not on this list the insurance becomes your responsibility. Yes there is a limit of 4000 kilometers per month, spread over the entire trip. No there are not, we suggest you buy 5 litre bottles and refill these as you go. This is more about keeping the water clean. Every 10,000kms a basic service is required. There are a roof top tent, a fridge that works off 12 and 240 volts, a kitchen, with pots and pans, cutlery, plates, cups and some other basic parts. a tool kit that you can use to help fix any problems, a compressor, puncture repair, tow rope, yellow jackets, booster cables, wheel tools, fire extinguisher, BBQ equipment. First thing be nice, I will give you some paperwork that includes my ID, the paperwork for the car and an affidavit, with this you will be able to cross every border to Tanzania. We are based in Cape Town and this is where the cars must be collected from and dropped off. However if you wanted to drive to a country for three months and then your friends drive back we are more than willing to support you in this. We have two contracts for the rental of the cars they are both in the next page under Important Documents, please read the contracts closely and these will be signed on the day of you taking the cars. We set up a Whats app group for the people in the car, our mechanic Danie and myself, this is to be used as a support mechanism for your travels, we can offer help whilst your on the road. Yes when you arrive to take your car, there are several steps we go through with you, first the engine and under the car, to find an issue early is always important. we go out for a drive on the road and off road to show the capabilities of the car and what it can do, we then go through the final aspects of the equipment. Yes the cars are tracked and can be seen over most of Africa, the tracker also gives us useful information on speeds, cornering, stopping distances, long idles etc. We will go through this with you on arrival.Frequently Asked Questions
